USSA Local Field Director Meeting Fires Up Volunteers

2/4/10

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) hosted its 2010 Local Field Director (LFD) conference from January 29- January 31 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.  The event was meant to bring the top USSA volunteer leaders from around the country together for a brain-storming and education session aimed at paving the way for issue campaigns and future Trailblazer Adventure Program events.

Over 40 LFD’s from 20 states attended. Sessions included a history of the USSA, an overview of the USSA’s different departments, and a detailed training on how to set up for Trailblazer Adventure Day events at locations nationwide.  A lively idea session was also held where all attendees interacted with national USSA staff to get the best thoughts on reaching out to new sportsmen, winning legislative battles and keeping youth interested in the outdoors.

“This was by far the best LFD meeting we have had yet,” said Frank Price, USSA field services director.  “These volunteers are at the front line of what we do and it is great to hear their ideas.”

The LFD program was originally started in 2004 as a way to staff the Trailblazer Adventure Program.  Over time, the need was obvious for a volunteer army to rally sportsmen to help with USSA’s mission of protecting hunting, fishing and trapping.  The LFD program evolved to meet these needs.

Today, LFDs represent the USSA in our fights against animal rights groups and help bring new sportsmen into the field.  They play a key role in conducting club visits, working booths at local shows and making sure sportsmen’s voices are heard by policymakers.
